Using domestic arts to live a simple, frugal life

I had been wanting to sew the Buttercup Bag I found at Made By Rae for a while now. I was also excited to begin a project for Build Your Wardrobe at Curiositys. When I saw that Kate sewed the Buttercup Bag it gave me the last push I needed to make one myself. I headed out to buy what I needed.

Fabric & Interfacing – $2.86
2 Decorative Buttons – $.88
Package of 4 snaps (I only needed one of them) – $2.94

Total: $6.68

I live in a no-sales-tax state so that is the actual cost for me. The only other thing I would have needed to purchase would be matching thread but I already had what I needed. I love the fabric combination. It makes me think of the beach.

After reading Kate’s post I took some of her advice. I chose to line the entire bag with interfacing and I’m glad I did. It holds its shape much nicer this way. The only thing I would do differently is make the strap a little sturdier. It works just fine but I’d like it a little better if it had more structure to it. I’m thinking about making another handbag with a stronger fabric, perhaps a linen. This bag is so easy to personalize by simply changing the fabric or buttons. I think this was a great price for a casual, summery handbag. I’m a purse fan and I like to change the one I use frequently so an easy, free pattern like this is a great frugal solution!

Why I do what I do ~ Chloe asked me very nicely today if we could please bring the Christmas tree back inside. (No, I didn’t do it.)

I really like the handbag. It does look nice and summery, and you can’t beat that price for sure.

I actually saw one similar on another site and thought it might be a nice project to do sometime in the near future.

Great bag! How long did it take you to make? I’d love to make one but the sewing list is too long! I’ll have to bookmark this pattern for later. Thanks for the link!

Thanks Andrea! It only took one evening, maybe 2 hours (my skill level is probably intermediate, so if you’re an expert you could whip it up pretty quickly!).
