Homemade Mothers Day Gift Ideas

Mother’s Day is coming. Need some ideas? With a little thought and planning you can give the moms in your life something meaningful without spending a small fortune.

Potted flowers

Purchase an inexpensive clay pot. Have the kids paint it or put hand prints on it. Put some potting soil in. Purchase a 6-pack of annuals and plant them. It will cost around $5 and make a MUCH bigger impression than the $25 hanging basket.

Good at woodworking?

Build her something small. Has she been wanting a spice rack? How about a jewelry box? A window box? My dad built a K-Cup holder for my mom for their coffee maker. If you’re talented with woodworking you can probably make something small and meaningful, inexpensively.

Spa kit

Make a CD of Mom’s favorite music. Buy an inexpensive (I’m talking $1) candle. Feeling ambitious? Make some bath salts. Not feeling ambitious? Buy some. If you wanted … you could even buy her a towel and embroider it. A fun idea – buy some body lotion and re-label it with something cute or witty.

I’ve found some beautiful ideas around the Internet lately that would make lovely gifts on Mothers Day too ….

Embroidered Scarf from The Purl Bee

Handkerchief Sachets from Skip To My Lou

Pleated Pouch from Skip To My Lou

Handmade Photo Cube from Make and Takes

Homemade Bath Tea from Make and Takes

Rice Pillow from Wise Craft

I love these ideas, especially the spa kit idea. A friend of mine had a wonderful Mother’s Day last year when her husband and kids prepared dinner for her. The kids designed and decorated “fancy” menus, they set the table with cloth napkins and a centerpiece they had bought at the Dollar Store. The husband cooked and the kids were the hostess and waiter, so they got a little dressed up. They lit candles and treated their mom to a special dinner. I thought that was so cute, and cheap and easy to do. She loved it of course, and is still talking about it :)

We moms aren’t hard to please.

300th post?! Congrats!!

I love your idea of potted flowers for Mother’s Day. They’re personal, affordable and last a heck of a lot longer than bouquets. Some local flower shops can really up their prices around holidays like this.

Also, a lot of local flower shops and plant stores (usually the big ones) host affordable planter design classes. I actually took my mother to one of these classes last year for Mother’s Day since she’s an avid gardener but wasn’t quite sure how to make a professional-looking potter. She learned tips on making planters and got to take home her creation. I gave her mine, too, of course. :)

Thanks for the post. I can’t believe that mothers day is already around the corner. I have found in the past that homemade gifts are just as enjoyed by my mom as the expensive ones. I think they go even further because she knows that you were thinking of her the entire time you were making it.

Cheers and happy mothers day!
