It’s here: the beginning of the cold and flu season. The shelves are stocked with decongestants and cough suppressants eagerly anticipating the afflicted buyer. Don’t do it! Don’t get sick!

Of course, there isn’t any way to ensure you will completely avoid getting a cold or even the dreaded flu, but there are some ways to better your odds. Wouldn’t it be nice to pay one less co-pay for a visit to the doctor, or buy one less package of Nyquil®? Here are some ways you can better your chances of keeping your family well this winter.

1. Wash Your Hands, Often. I’ve placed a pump bottle of hand sanitizer near our dining room table in hopes that it will become our new habit to sanitize before meals. It would be ideal to have each family member take a trip to the restroom to suds up, but that’s just not going to happen. I also have a sanitizer in a cup holder in the front of my car for use after gassing-up or shopping.

2. Wash Door Handles, Telephones, Keyboards … anything that hands touch really often, wash them weekly. Places like the refrigerator door handle, cabinet nobs, microwave buttons and winter gloves are slimy, little magnets for sick germs.

3. Stay Home! Get well faster and get the rest when you need it instead of waiting until you’re a congested bomb about to explode.

4. No Smoochin’! Make a valid attempt to not share your sickness with each and every member of your household. I mean, really, give the humidifier a break! Your sweet little angel of a child will be alright with a kiss on the forehead for a few days and your hubby will certainly not die if he has to wait a couple days until you get better.

Basically, cleanliness is next to, umm, wellness, among other things!
