If you’re going to buy pepperoni for pizza, calzones, salads or any other purpose, it’s almost always a better deal to get it sliced fresh from your deli rather than buying it pre-packaged. I don’t ever need any more than a quarter pound of it, so I generally pay around $1.50 as opposed to around $3 for pre-packaged.
The other benefit to purchasing it from the deli is that I can have it sliced however I like. For pizza I like it really thin, but for salads I like it really thick. I like to toss leftover pepperoni into pasta sauce or put it in sandwiches, so if we have a little extra, that doesn’t go to waste either. The Italian Pasta Salad you see above is made with leftover pepperoni. Want to know what’s in it?
1 lb. cooked, tri-color rotini
3 oz.(ish) monterey jack cheese, cubed small
1 green pepper, diced
parmesan cheese
Italian dressing
(Also add olives, grape tomatoes, ham, other peppers, whatever is in your fridge)
Combine all the above ingredients and refrigerate. You may want to add more dressing when you serve it. Yum.

Why I do what I do ~ I just went to tuck my daughter in before I go to bed for the night. There’s something so pure and innocent about a sleeping child; something that makes everything inside of you quiet and intent on the pinkness of their cheeks, the perfectness of their eyelashes and the sound of them breathing. Something causes me to linger there in the quietness of that moment. I can’t place my finger on what it is but every time it happens I whisper the most sincere thank you that I was able to become a mother. There is nothing like it.

Now that’s a salad I can make. I recently found a pepperoni that doesn’t have additives or MSG. So glad I happened upon your place by beingfrugal. Subscribing to your feed…

And, whatever you do, don’t discount your local pizza chain as a great source of pepperoni (and other toppings). My husband owns a franchise, and we have a few customers who only come in for toppings and dough, which we sell at cost. With the economy being where it is, we look at it as a measure of goodwill. Try it, you may be surprised!

I’m hungry and that looks so goo! I’ll have to try it. I try to only buy meats that are nitrate/nitrite free and that is hard to find in pepperoni (unless you go to whole foods). I’ll have to try the deli counter to see what I can find. Good tip!
