Quick Tip: Taco Seasoning

TacosSo it’s 5:00 and I’m about to start supper. It’s taco night. I put the ground beef in the skillet and go to the pantry to grab the seasoning packet. There isn’t one. I usually buy a few of them when they’re on sale and obviously my supply ran out. Grrr. I called my hubby and asked him to pick up a packet on his way home from work. Then I got an idea. What’s in taco seasoning anyway? I must have the ingredients here at home. Sure enough – I do.

A quick search at allrecipes.com yielded exactly what I needed. It was a recipe to mix up one packet worth of taco seasoning. I called my hubby back and told him not to pick up the packet. This made him curious, “Why not?” I told him, “I’m making it myself.” He stifled a laugh as to say, “of course you are.” One more prepared item to check off the list of things I need to buy. Now I just need to get an empty spice container and mix up a whole batch of it.

And by the way, it was delicious.

Taco Seasoning Blend

Found at All Recipes

  • 1 tbsp. chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes (I didn’t use them and it still had plenty of spice)
  • 1/4 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1-1/2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. cornstarch

Directions: Mix all of the above ingredients together. Add to browned ground beef or cooked chicken with 3/4 cup of water. Bring to a boil then simmer until thickened.

Why I do what I do ~ I haven’t been able to convince Chloe that lettuce is called “lettuce” and not “salad.” She thinks salad is just lettuce and the veggies are a topping. She says, “Look Mommy, I’m eating my salad” as she pulls the lettuce out of her taco. I say, “It’s called lettuce Chloe.” She says, “No, it’s salad.” … whatever :)

Oh! I can’t wait to try it!!! How exciting! I think I’ve seen nearly all of those ingredients here.

By the way, Chloe will love visiting England sometime. They always ask if you want “salad” on your sandwich or on the side, and often it is just a couple pieces of lettuce! :)

Hi Nicki,
I’ve totally tried this recipe and I love it! I was in the same situation as you a couple of months ago, looked up taco seasoning on allrecipes and voila. We like this homemade version better than the store bought packages! Some times it pays to be just a tad disorganized and run out of a key ingredient. :)

And the best thing it was probably healthier! A lot of those seasoning packets have MSG in them! I wonder what the cost difference is?
