We recently spent some time visiting with my husband’s parents. While we were there my mother-in-law shared an idea to which my husband replied, “I think I see a Quick Tip here!” How funny is he? I’ve got him recruiting post ideas for me!
Her tip was simple, which is why it’s perfect for this feature. She freezes leftover lasagna in single-portion sizes. I love it! I know many of you do batch cooking and I do my best not to envy. I don’t have the freezer space for it so it isn’t an option for me. This idea appeals to me though. I usually save one serving of leftovers in the fridge for David to take for lunch and I generally try to make meals that are appropriately-sized for our small family. Even so, there is still the occasional meal that leaves me with way too much left over.
I like the idea of the single-serve frozen portions for several reasons. On nights when I’m not home, my hubby can just pull one out for himself. Even if he’s running late for work he could pull one out real quick to take with him. I think something like this could help fight the urge to snatch take-out when things get crazy too.
If I froze one serving of lasagna, one serving of baked mac ‘n’ cheese and one serving of stuffed shells then all three of us could have one of our favorites all in the same night. Hmmm … I think I’m on to an idea here. We could have a “Favorite’s Friday” once a month!
Alright, maybe I’m getting carried away, and maybe you already do this at your home. Clearly, I don’t have everything figured out yet
If you ever think of a clever tip for living frugal or simplifying your family life I’d love to hear it and I’d be thrilled to give you credit for it.
Why I do what I do ~ I think I’m having an identity crisis. Sometimes Chloe calls me, “Mommy.” Other times she says, “Mama.” When she’s yelling for me it’s “M – o – m!” A new one she’s adopted is “Mom-Mom.” Ya know … sort of like the Tom-Tom but better

I LOVE LOVE LOVE doing this! I’ve found you can freeze most anything and it still tastes just as good. Since it’s just my hubby and I, we can’t always eat up a whole casserole (or whatever), and I hate to waste the food. The instant meals are so convenient when you AND your husband have full times jobs plus jobs on the side. Great post!

Ha! Me again! JUST thought of something we recently started doing to save money, or at least my HUSBAND has started doing…
You know how all razors now are going to 3, 4 and even 5 (5???) blades? Well it seems that with the increasing blades comes increasing price tags. My husband was sticking with 3 blades, and we were still paying around $14 for 4 replacement blades. I KNOW!!!! Well he recently got the idea to try out an old-fashioned “safety razor”:

We didn’t even have to buy one because my mom had one she bought at a garage sale for decoration, but now just sits in a drawer. Get this – we can get the replacement blades at Wal-Mart at an attractive price of $2 for 10 blades! They last just as long as the Mach 3 blades, and while he said it takes some getting used to, the shave is just as good. You could even try to find one at a flea market instead of buying new, or see if your grandpa has one laying around.

I have the bad habit of cooking for 10 when I only need to feed 1-2. I package the leftovers in single-serving containers and then they can be easily used for lunches or dinners without much extra fuss. If something has been in the fridge for a while, I just throw it in the freezer for later.
