Using domestic arts to live a simple, frugal life

Today I’ve been sewing doll clothes for one of Chloe’s dolls. She’s really into babies and taking care of them right now so I’m hoping this will be a gift she’ll like. She doesn’t have any doll clothes with the exception of the one outfit that came with this doll and that outfit is difficult for a 2-1/2 year old to put on and take off. So I decided to sew some easy-on/easy-off doll clothes that she’d actually be able to use.

This project is using all materials that I already have. Doll clothes require very little material. Add to that a few scraps of elastic and some spare buttons and ta-da! I didn’t use any patterns to make these clothes. I just used the doll. The one I’m using is a Cabbage Patch Newborn doll that I gave her last Christmas. The beauty about making doll clothes is that they don’t have to be as sturdy or perfect-fitting as kids clothes so they’re a great project for a beginner. Here’s what I’ve got:

I like the green dress the best. If she likes them I can whip up a few more after Christmas. They were pretty easy. I plan to wrap the doll along with the clothes so she gets the idea that they go together. I know, I know … seems a little deceptive wrapping a gift that she already owns, but the whole point of Christmas isn’t to spend tons of money on fifty new gifts, it’s to make my daughter really happy … and I think this will do just that.

Why I do what I do ~ because I can’t wait to take Chloe outside to play in the snow when she wakes up. I just love her all bundled up in her gear. The only thing you can see are her smiling eyes and her rosy cheeks …

I really like how you showed some examples of what you did. It gives me an idea of what your talking about. I have little cousians that have a major amount of dolls. What i plan to do this year is make some clothes for them. Your examples were very helpful. Thank you!!
