Are you going to be pretty busy for the next week? Although I’m shooting for a quieter, more peaceful holiday, there are still quite a few things on my to-do list this coming week. A lot of my to-do’s are finishing Christmas gift projects and a little shopping. None of it is all that fun for a 2-1/2 year old. Keeping in mind with what’s important this season, I want to ensure that I set aside a piece of my schedule for family fun each day. That’s tough to do when I have sewing and knitting to finish, baking to do and just all-around holiday busyness. However, before the Christmas season even began I decided that this one was going to be different. I am making a conscious effort to decrease the stress and commercialism and to emphasize family togetherness and the birth of Jesus.
That said, I’ve been trying to have Christmas fun with my daughter and nieces for the past week or so and it’s been lovely. We’ve downloaded some really fun coloring pages from Flipflops and Applesauce to color and decorate. We’ve danced to Christmas music and watched some Holiday specials (they love Shrek The Halls). Today we went to the girls’ first Christmas party and gift exchange with a bunch of their little friends (and my friends too … bonus!), and yesterday we made reindeer puppets!
If you read my blog post yesterday, in the “Why I do what I do” I told you I was going to attempt it. It worked out really well. The girls (my daughter Chloe, 2-1/2 and my nieces Jazmyn, 3 and Aliyah, almost 2) love puppets, so I thought it would be fun to make paper bag puppets with them. I downloaded this fun template and cut the pieces out myself. Then I had the girls color them and ‘help’ me glue them on. I showed them how to use the puppets to make them talk but they weren’t interested. They just wanted to carry them around the house, which is totally fine with me. Who am I to tell them the ‘right way’ to use a puppet! After my nieces went home Chloe told me she wanted to make a snow puppet to go with her reindeer. Thinking quickly, I retrieved some cotton balls from the bathroom, some construction paper and we went to work. All in all we had a fun time creating together. And the ‘together’ was the whole point of it anyway.
What are you doing to emphasize the ‘together’ of your holidays? I’m having a great time with the kiddos here. Any suggestions for little girls with short attention spans?
Why I do what I do ~ I told Chloe it was important to take a nap today. Ever since I said that she’s tried to insert the word ‘important’ into every sentence … “It’s important for the water Mommy.” “It’s important the dolly Mommy.” She’ll get it. I love to hear her trying out new words and figuring out how to use them.
