My Botched Knitted Hat – Recovered!

Over the past few winters I have discovered the soothing art of knitting. A friend taught me the knit stitch and I was hooked. I knitted several scarves out of that fun, furry yarn and they came out beautiful (the furry effect hides mistakes!). This year though, I wanted to broaden my talent. I decided to learn to purl, the other basic knitting stitch. I searched quite a few sites, looking for the best how-to for a knit stitch. This one was exactly what I needed. In fact, if you don’t know how to knit at all this site will get you started.

I looked for a pattern labeled for a beginner and found an adorable ribbed hat to make for my daughter. I kept it in mind the next several times I was shopping and found an skein of yarn for $1. I was really excited to begin my new project and I dove right in.

Well, it took a little longer than I anticipated to complete it, and when I finished I was disappointed to see that I had not held the yarn at a consistent tension, so the bottom of the hat, which was supposed to roll up, was way too loose, making it a very poor fit. I was disheartened and I set it aside, until I got a great idea. I had some ribbon in my craft stash which I wove through the ribs of the hat, cuffing it like it was supposed to be, then tied a bow creating the tension that it needed. Now I think it’s really adorable and it fits her perfectly!

The original link for the pattern I used no longer works and of course I don’t have the copy I printed, so I searched for a similar pattern and found this one, which looks very similar to the one I made.

How about you? Are you an expert knitter, giggling at my screw-up? Maybe you’ve never tried knitting. If you haven’t I encourage you to give it a shot. It’s an inexpensive craft that’s really rewarding … once you get the hang of it!
