One of the best ways to save money is to plan for known expenses. Easter is about a month away and I’ve begun to plan for it. We celebrate Easter in our home remembering the resurrection of Jesus as the focus for the holiday. We usually have a big ham dinner as a family but we also indulge in the ’sweetness’ of the holiday too with Easter baskets and an egg hunt.
This year I have two projects that I’m doing that take some planning ahead. I’m sewing Chloe’s Easter dress, which I also did last year and I’m sewing her a small gift for her Easter basket. Because she’s only almost 3 we don’t fill her basket with 3 pounds of chocolate but I still like to have something special for her. This year I’m going to sew her a bunny.
Because I have this ridiculous need to constantly one-up myself, I’ve chosen a dress pattern that is more difficult than the one I made last year and I’ve decided to sew an animal, which I’ve never done before. I haven’t begun either of my projects, although I have all of the materials. I wanted to let you know what I’d be working on and hopefully give you at least one update on my progress.
- I downloaded the free bunny pattern from Purl Bee, one of my favorite sites. I have all the materials I need for the bunny on hand already because I’m going to use scrap fabric to make it. So the bunny will be FREE.
- I purchased the dress pattern for $3.44 at Walmart along with the fabric, which cost $3, ribbon for $1.40 and a zipper for under $2 (I forgot exactly). So the dress will be completed for under $10.
I’m hoping to begin the bunny during nap time today. I’m really excited to do these projects. It won’t be the most beautiful dress or the most perfect stuffed animal but my daughter will be certain that she’s loved and my time is worth spending on her. I’m happy that I’m saving money on these projects but even if they cost the same as buying the items I’d still make them. It’s one of the ways that I show my daughter that she’s important to me and that I care to invest my talents in her.
*Update* Here are the links to my finished projects: The Bunny & The Dress.
What ways do you invest your talents into your family? Do you do anything special to celebrate Easter?

Why I do what I do ~ Today Chloe handed me her favorite bear and told me he was a baby. Then she asked what I was. Not sure what she was getting at, I told her I’m a mommy. She said, “You’re not a mommy, you’re my friend.” I melted into a pool on the floor.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the dress turns out. I keep telling myself that I’m going to get a pattern and fabric and make my little girl a dress, but I haven’t done it yet. Maybe, I’ll just go get the stuff this weekend and get started.
I love to make special things for my family too. For birthday’s, I like to bake and decorate the cakes myself. My son had a race car birthday party last October and I made all the decorations for his party too. It was a lot of work, but I think it just makes the occasion more special.
As for Easter, we don’t really have specific family traditions, but our church stuffs candy into $10,000 eggs every year, and we hold a community-wide Easter egg hunt. It’s always really fun, except for the fact that the kids end up with ton’s of candy.
