Attention All Hostesses!

in Managing Time

To each person who has chosen to wear the Thanksgiving apron. To the loving hands preparing one of the most anticipated meals of the year I send you a request. Work as hard as you can … today (Wednesday).

What can you do today that will free up your time tomorrow? The Thanksgiving meal is a big deal, don’t get me wrong. I like to have turkey with 8 different sides all smothered in gravy and have a tiny piece of 4 different desserts just like anyone else. However, I also like to enjoy my time with the people I love the most.

That said, let’s not keep mommy in the kitchen all day on Thanksgiving. Endure a quarter of the football game with your husband. Watch the Thanksgiving parade with your kids. Play a family game. Don’t spend 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. cooking in and cleaning the kitchen.

Consider doing the following things today:

  • Make all desserts
  • Make casseroles that can be refrigerated then just tossed in the oven tomorrow
  • Peel and cut your potatoes
  • Set your table (tonight after supper)
  • Prepare hors d’ouevres (if you’re having them)

I’m only responsible for a few items on Thanksgiving. I’m making a chocolate pie, ambrosia, dinner rolls and stuffing/dressing. The only thing I’ll prepare on Thanksgiving day is the stuffing, and I’ll try to have the bread cubed and the celery, onion and apple already chopped, making it a cinch to throw together. How about you? What are you responsible for preparing? Do you plan to make anything ahead?

With that, I’d like to share our family’s recipe for Ambrosia, which we eat with our meal, not after. Enjoy!

Michaels Family Ambrosia

2 boxes sugar-free vanilla pudding mix
1-1/2 c. milk
1 large tub sugar-free whipped topping
1 large jar maraschino cherries
1 large can mandarin oranges
1 large can sliced peaches
1 large can crushed pineapple
(you could just use 2 large cans of fruit cocktail, but I don’t like the yucky grapes in it)

Directions: Pour all fruit into a colander, set aside. Mix pudding mix and milk with hand mixer until thick. Gently stir in whipped topping. Gently stir in fruit and refrigerate. Best when made the day before. Enjoy!

Why I do what I do ~ I was furiously baking dinner rolls for my bread business today, but I was stopped dead in my tracks when I opened a cupboard to see a baby doll asleep in place of my large mixing bowls.
