The Day After …

So, yesterday was a crummy, chaotic day. You got almost nothing accomplished and now you’re behind. How do you get through today without being completely drained of the precious energy you have left?

Step One: Identify Your Productive Time of Day. When do you have the most energy? For me it’s the morning, from about 8-10 a.m. I get another little burst right before bed, which I use to toss a lingering ice cream bowl or two into the dishwasher.

Step Two: Prioritize. What is the most important thing for you to accomplish today? Do that thing during your Most Productive time and then work down your list.

Step Three: Make progress quickly. I don’t mean work as fast as you can. What’s the one little thing that makes you feel like you’ve made progress? If I’ve made my bed my bedroom feels clean instantly. I can pile whatever I want to on top of it, but as long as it’s made I feel good.  My house in general feels better to me if my kitchen is clean and a candle is burning. If you do the thing that makes you feel good you’ll be motivated to keep going.

Step Four: Stop. You’ve been working like a crazy person catching up on everything you’re behind on, which is great, but you have to know your stopping point. If you’ve worked so hard you’re completely and utterly worn out then you’ve gone too far. We’ve all done it … and regretted it. I always feel bad that my husband gets what’s left of me and my energy when he gets home at night. Every now and then it’s a good idea to save some of my niceness for him.

What motivates you? What gets you going and helps you get things done faster or in a more productive manner?

Why I do what I do ~ because my daughter helped me make peanut butter cookies last night while standing on a dining chair and imprinted a memory in my mind I’ll never forget.
