Focusing On Others

in My Thoughts

Oy.
It’s easy to get absorbed in all that I need to do and what’s going in my life and my world but sometimes it can take it’s toll. It can make me a little self-centered, even gloomy.

Taking care of myself is important. As a matter of fact, caring for myself is a prerequisite to being able to care for others. I’m not talking about caring for myself though. I’m talking about focusing on myself.

Right now I’ve got some big things going on in my life and I’m pretty focused on them; obsessively so. That isn’t healthy.  Have you ever been worried about something that’s entirely out of your hands? Did the worrying help? Of course not. I’m a fretter. I’m a worrier. I take my problems (and everyone else’s)  to heart and I think about them … constantly. I’ve improved over the years though. Would you like to know how?

I focus on someone else.

Not something else, someone else. There’s a difference. Cleaning the house doesn’t get anything off my mind. It gets rid of nervous energy or frustration but I’m still festering. When I focus on a person it engages my feelings and my mind, which are the root of my fretting.

(Random movie quote: “Fester, fester, fester, rot, rot, rot” Who said it?)

This afternoon I caught my mind obssessing. I stood up and thought of a craft to do with the girls. I focused on them which made them happy, and for a few minutes I forgot about myself.

What helps you take the focus off your problems or worries?

Why I do what I do ~ Chloe has spent literally hours creating things to give to her Daddy. I’m going to have a huge stack for him when he gets home.

I also worry, I have a little saying that helps me and I don’t know why but if I say it it helps;
If I won’t have thought about it, forget it! Crazy but it works for me!
