Walking In A …

Where I live we have 3 winter storms all lined up to hit us in the next week. It seems the moment the weather report comes out there are people frantically running to the grocery store, assuming the worst. They stock up on 10 cases of water and canned goods. Not me though. The maddness has always caused me to smirk a little. It seems kinda silly to me. In fact, I welcome the impending storms with a contented smile.

There’s something about the way a simple act of nature (a snow storm) just slows things down. You literally have to drive slower. It takes longer to get out of your driveway, longer to get out of the house (ever tried to suit-up a 2-year-old?) and frequently cancels plans. I welcome these inconveniences and joyfully anticipate their effects. I’ve always loved the effects of a storm.

It forces us to take a break. There’s nothing like having all of your plans cancelled for you, no guilt in that one. Consider it a gift and cozy up in the house with your family, and speaking of family …

It causes us to be together. With all of your plans cancelled you’re probably stuck in the house or out in the snow with your family. It’s nice when that happens sometimes. If you choose to make the best of it there is some great fun to be had. In some towns when there are small baby booms they are frequently able to track the date of conception back to a storm or power outage … ;-) … and speaking of that

It’s romantic. I know, I know, I’m getting mushy and sentimental on you. Let’s face it. Dates aren’t cheap, especially not if you are a parent and have to hire a babysitter. Let me just say this … if you haven’t been able to connect with your spouse lately, bundle up and go for a walk while it’s lightly snowing. There is something incredibly magical about it.

It simplifies things. Very likely, I will not have television during some of these storming days and it’s possible that the power may go out. What can we make for supper that doesn’t involve electricity? Bowls of cereal by candlelight? Without tv we’ll be doing more reading, game playing, sewing (no, not the hubby) and playing. Doesn’t sound so bad does it?

So if, like me, you live in a place that will have a white Christmas for certain, then grab your mug of cocoa and toast the season with me. If you’re a warm-weather friend then make yourself some cocoa anyway and listen to the song “I’m Dreaming Of A White Christmas,” for me. I don’t think I’ll be needing that little tune. I’m pulling out “Walking In A Winter Wonderland.”

Why I do what I do ~ I’m about to make reindeer puppets with my daughter and nieces. If it goes over well, and I so hope it does, I’ll post on it tomorrow.

I live in Tennessee and your post really makes me long for a big snow. This whole week its just been wet and dreary outside. And that really puts a damper on my mood. But I get excited when I see snow. Here’s hoping that we get one soon.
