Cropped Pants

Growing up to the sky

My daughter is tall for her age. She has been in the 90th percentile for her height since she was an infant, which is adorable considering I reach the grand height of 5′ 1″.

She’s nearing 3 years old now so she’s lost all her baby chubbiness and she’s potty trained so she doesn’t wear a diaper either. This leaves me with a skinny, tall kid (for her age, of course). She outgrows pants at an incredible rate. I buy pants that are too long for her and they are high-waters in a month, at least it seems that way.

I am constantly packing away pants she’s outgrown that are in perfect condition because she barely had a chance to wear them. It’s frustrating because they all still fit her waist and they are so darn cute that I’m not ready to be done with them yet.

The solution: I’m going to pick a bunch of my favorite ones to make into cropped pants or bermuda shorts for the spring. If you can hem pants then you can do this. I’m really excited about this project.  I’m going to have a bunch of “new” bottoms for Chloe in the spring right when the season begins. This was my husband’s idea, if you can believe it. I think my craftiness is getting to him.

Why I do what I do ~ Chloe was running around the house pretending to be Barbie Rapunzel tonight. Every minute or so she’d approach me and ask, “I’m ‘just like‘ Barbie Rapunzel mommy?”

Another solution that could get you through the winter and could really look cute, is to add a bit of eyelet cotton ruffle to the bottom of her pants. You could either buy this at a fabric store (it comes in various widths.) Or make ruffles yourself out of fun kids fabrics. If you don’t like ruffles… add a “cuff” out of fabric. You could then make a matching tee by taking one of her existing t-shirts and appliqueing on a patch of the fabric or adding a strip of it to the bottom of the sleeves and around the neck.

That’s a really cute idea. I actually have some eyelet on hand. I may try this. Thanks!

I love this clever idea! My friend has this problem with her growing daughter too.

I had the opposite problem. My oldest was in the 5% for height, so 95% of kids his age were taller than he was. We were always rolling up his jeans. He’s now 20 and is about 5′7″.

My mom became a fantastic hemmer as I was growing up. Don’t worry about feeling small. You tower an entire inch over my mother.
