When I was growing up, we moved every few years due to my dad’s Navy career. Couple that with Dad’s overall cheapness and Mom giving in, and I didn’t grow up in a house were time and effort were put into decor.

As an adult, I’ve put off doing anything to my home since I’ve lived in apartments. I recently explained to a friend that I hated to spend money decorating my apartment since it’s not permanent. I have one thing on the wall in the whole place – and that is a painting by my sister-in-law.

My friend then pointed out that I’ve lived here four years. It makes me a little sad, because I’ve never felt like his is my home, just where I live for now. I’ve got some plans to add some style.

I’m currently working on one small project that isn’t costing us a penny but will help make our rooms neater & hopefully a little more colorful/cuter, too. (it’ll be a blog post soon!)

Nicki, you are so right – there are so many things you can do to make your home nicer for you without having to go out and spend anything. The most drastic change can sometimes just be to get rid of some clutter, rearrange the furniture and pick some flowers from the yard to put in a vase. Trust me, I know how decorating can feel overwhelming. I am grateful for my frugal ways because I love the simplicity of the style we’ve grown into and that the inexpensive touches I do here and there really make a difference.
