Using domestic arts to live a simple, frugal life

What are you doing sitting at home? GO SHOPPING!

Yup, you heard me right. Stick a $20 bill in your pocket and go to your favorite clothing store. There’s a catch of course. You must go shopping for winter items that you need.

Even though it is currently snowing at my house, every store I enter is filled with swimsuits and flip-flops. Apparently we are dying for summer. However, tucked in the back of the store, crammed onto racks and shoved onto shelves, are the sweaters and boots that we’re all tired of wearing. The stores are tired of them too, really tired of them, SO tired of them in fact that you can purchase winter sale items for ridiculously low prices right now.

In the past couple weeks I’ve been able to find MANY items for around $5 each. I picked up a couple sweaters and the best find of all – TWO new pairs of leather dress boots for under $10 each (one was originally $110 and the other was $60). Last year at this time I purchased a winter coat for my daughter to use this year for $5. I could start naming off stores but they are all doing the same thing – getting rid of winter items to make space for their new spring clothes.

Before you go skipping through the mall without a care in the world I’d like to reign you in with a couple guidelines.

  • Set A BudgetBefore you walk out the door set an amount that you will spend. If you don’t trust yourself then carry cash only, when it’s gone it’s gone.
  • Think About What You Need – What size will your child be next winter? A shirt might be easy but I wouldn’t buy kids shoes. What have you been groaning about needing for your winter wardrobe over the past few months? What new styles were over-priced all season that you might be able to get now?
  • Stay Away From The Sandals! - Unless they are getting rid of a few items from last summer, all of the next-season styles are on appealing displays at top prices. DO NOT BUY THEM. Just walk away.

I truly love shopping so these are guidelines that I personally MUST stick to. When I do though, I’m really happy. I love to come home and feel great about the amount that I spent and the value I was able to get for my money.

Have you found any end-of-season deals lately?

Why I do what I do ~ After lunch I told my daughter that she would be taking her nap soon (I have to prepare her for these things). Her reply, “That’s so funny mom,” as if I was obviously joking.

Great advice. But for some reason it’s hard for me to shop ahead of time. I need to though, it’s so much cheaper. You’ve inspired me!
