Shaw’s is the one and only grocery store in my town. It’s where I do almost all of my grocery shopping. They are running a promotion from now through April 15 called Refund Rewards. They want you to use your tax refund money to buy a Shaw’s gift card. Why would you do that?
If you buy a $250 gift card they add $20 to it. If you buy a $300 gift card they add $30 to it.
David told me about this a little while ago and asked what I thought about it. I wasn’t sure so we decided to wait on it. Here are my thoughts:
This is a good idea for someone:
- That shops regularly at Shaw’s anyway.
- Who is able to control their spending and stick to a grocery budget.
This is NOT a good idea for someone:
- Who would rarely go to Shaw’s.
- Who grocery shops haphazardly, without planning.
- Who doesn’t budget for groceries.
It’s obvious that this is a good deal but only for someone with the self-control to take $330 to the grocery store and only spend $75. We decided to give it a shot. David picked the card up yesterday. I’m a strict grocery-shopper, decent at sticking to my budget and pretty good at planning my list. I’m hoping I can make the card last the same amount of time I’d be able to make that amount of cash last. If I can, I’ll be giving myself a 10% bonus.
What are your thoughts? Have your tried this before? Would you be able to do it now?
Why I do what I do ~ All day today Chloe has been wearing a tail which is basically a fabric gift bag with a long string, the string is tucked into the back of her pants with the bag hanging down to the floor. She runs around swishing her little tush like she’s a horse or something. I’ve been stifling a laugh all day.

We did this one year with Lowe’s gift certificates. We’d already had some home improvement projects planned and had priced them out, so it worked out well. We essentially “made” 10% on the deal.
I agree that it works best if you’re a careful spender, or already have set purchases in mind. It would be really easy to “blow” the money on stuff you don’t need if you didn’t have a plan in place.
I’ve never had the opportunity to try getting a card like that, but if I did, I would definitely go for it.
I’m good at sticking to a budget and list, so I don’t think I would have a problem either.
Good luck!
