Washing A Shower Curtain Liner

in Saving Money

Yucky Hotel
Did you know that you can wash your shower curtain liner in the washing machine? You probably did but I didn’t. We have two showers and whenever one of the liners started getting a little icky, I’d just buy a new one. You can get a really chintzy one for just a few dollars – but you know – you get what you pay for on that one.

Anyway, back to the point. Someone told me that you can wash the liner in the washing machine (is this seriously common knowledge?) and I couldn’t believe it, so I tried it.

I set the cycle to medium and cold/cold. I used regular laundry detergent and a little bleach. Then I just hung it to dry. I read somewhere that you can throw a couple white towels in with the liner for extra scrubbing power. That seems like a good idea too. It worked pretty good. It came almost completely clean. I thought, “Wow. I am definitely blogging this.”

This probably won’t save me a ton of money (would you classify a ton of money as 2,000 British pounds? :) ) but I also like the idea of wasting less. A shower liner takes up a lot of space in the trash!

OK, I can take it. Tell me, did everyone in the world already know this but me?

Why I do what I do ~ I was putting Chloe’s mittens on this morning and we had this conversation:

Chloe- “Are these my mittens from Nana?”

Me- “Yes.”

Chloe- “Did she sew them for me?”

Me- “No, she bought them.”

Chloe- “Why didn’t she sew them?”

:) I so love that she assumes everything she owns is homemade.

Yes, I knew this.

But only because shower curtains in England cost around 50 British pounds (which is my definition of a ton of money, at least when it comes to shower curtains!).

So instead of throwing them away like I used to do, I learned how to wash them. Didn’t know that trick about putting a couple towels in there with it, though. That’s a good one!

I didn’t know that! Thanks for blogging about it. That will sure save me a few bucks here and there :)

Yes, I’ve been doing this for years. I just put it in with my load of towels. Sometimes I even put it in the dryer with a couple of clean DRY towels for *just a few minutes* to get most of the moisture off, then I can hang it back up right away. Not too long, though, or it could probably melt.

Our tub is a claw-foot tub, which necessitates three shower liners! Even buying the cheaper ones adds up to about $20 each time I need new liners. Since that isn’t my idea of a fun way to spend money, I do wash my liners. They don’t come out as clean as new, but at least they are usable for longer. I usually try to wash mine about twice or more. Sometimes they don’t fare well in the washer, but it is always worth a try to see how they will do!

I throw in a large rag and wash on hot, with bleach and detergent.

Good idea. This also reminds me that I need to wash the actual shower curtain!

Gotta try this! Do you have a front loader or a top loader? I think I might try adding some vinegar as the main problem on ours right now is hard water spots.

I don’t have a front-loader. Maybe someone else does that has tried it? Vinegar is a good idea!

Yes, this works. In fact, I just washed one of ours last week. The only pain is dripping water from it while carrying it to wherever I’m going to dry it.

One word of caution. Do not hang them outside when it is below freezing. They will freeze and crack.

That never would have occurred to me. Beyond the expense, it is a pain to go out to and buy these, so I will certainly be trying this the next time I notice ours looking icky.

This is definitely a great idea, now if they could only come up with a solution that would prevent the mildew that grows on the shower curtain!
